Yes โ and it is very friendly for domestic divers: Sanya is one of the most concentrated freediving destinations in China. Water temperature is mostly 24โ29โ year-round, dropping to 21โ24โ in JanuaryโFebruary; a 1.5โ3mm wetsuit is generally enough, and 3โ5mm is recommended in winter. Fly there and you can basically get straight in the water.
Why is it good for beginners? Dive shops and instructors are concentrated here, and courses, gear rental and boat trip arrangements are well established. Water visibility is usually 10โ20 m, and gets noticeably worse after typhoons and during the winter swell season. For people who have just got certified and want to build underwater experience, the cost is much lower than flying to Southeast Asia.
- Always follow the buddy system. Any breath-hold in the water must have a buddy with rescue capability present, even in shallow water; never go into the sea alone, no matter how familiar the bay.
- Go out with a qualified dive shop. Confirm that the instructor holds a certification and that the boat has a legal operating license; sea trips depend on the day's swell and current, and trips are cancelled when wind and waves are strong, so leave a day of flexibility in your plans.
- Use a float and a guide line, and watch out for boats and sun exposure. Carry a surface float (with a dive flag) throughout the dive so passing boats can see you โ do not rely on a surface marker buoy alone; for sun protection, prioritize physical cover such as a rash guard and hood, and choose a reef-friendly sunscreen.
In one sentence: Sanya gives you convenience, not a shortcut. Breath-holding in the water still requires a buddy with rescue capability. Go with an instructor and a legitimate dive shop, and do not push your limits in waters you do not know, or without a float and a guide line.
