Two divers died after an emergency ascent from a depth of about 80 meters at a popular dive site in Lake Constance. The accident happened at around 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, August 2, at the Tennisplätze dive site in the town of Überlingen, in the Lake Constance district of Baden-Württemberg, Germany. The victims were a 46-year-old woman and her 64-year-old dive partner. The two were diving together and began an emergency ascent for reasons that are still unclear.
According to local police, the male diver was already unconscious during the ascent. The female diver was initially reported to have lost consciousness after reaching shore, but officials later corrected this to say she became unconscious shortly after surfacing, while still in the water. Despite resuscitation efforts at the scene, including CPR, both divers died at the site. In a statement, Ravensburg Police Headquarters said the exact cause of death and the trigger for the emergency ascent are under further investigation by the Überlingen water police.

Lake Constance is the second-largest freshwater lake in Western Europe, bordered by Germany, Austria and Switzerland, and is commonly known in German as the Bodensee. It is a popular inland diving destination for divers from the surrounding countries, with most diving activity concentrated on the German north shore. The Tennisplätze dive site is close to the town of Überlingen and is used by both beginners and experienced technical divers. The gently sloping shallow water near shore is often used for training courses, but the lake bed forms a steep drop at around 30 meters, eventually reaching a depth of about 120 meters. Police have seized the dead divers' equipment and opened an investigation into the sequence of events that led to the emergency ascent.
